What is 'bubbling'?

As a member of BGI, we pooled our knowledge and ideas for brug care. One of the best ideas to come out of this was "bubbling". For me, it's an easy method to root 'instant trees' from long cuttings of a brug. It may not work on every variety, but to me, it's worth a try to both save space and get quicker blooms. I do this in a cool room; my basement with growlight, or unheated bedroom with natural light.

Let me start with a photo of the set-up:

As you can see, it's just a $5 tall plastic kitchen trash can.  Add 3 inches of water, a $7 aquarium air-pump, airline tubing and air stones or bars and you're on your way. (For each container this size I would only use 1 bar or 2 airstones) Each pump can run several setups using the gang valve.

This container has room to start about 10 trees.

  • If cuttings are limp, you can attach to bamboo stakes for straighter growth, but keep stakes out of the water.
  • To keep stems from turning mushy, insert a toothpick in it's end
  • Check every few weeks to seperate the roots from the airstones, add water if needed, and turn cuttings for even growth.
  • Remove any leaves that start below the water line--you just want growth on the top for a nice standard
  • As trees start extreme growth, you may want to add another container or start potting up (I usually start in late April or March)
  • When getting ready to pot, you can start adding 1 tsp Miracle Grow to the water
  • You can pot up at your leisure
  • Or plant straight into the ground when a rainy or overcast period is forcast.
